Since UX is a relatively newly-named field, it’s natural that it attracts many career changers. What is great is that many different types of subjects bring skills necessary to be a good designer. Listed below are some examples:

  • Psychology – due to the nature of research and understanding a user
  • Business – since much of UX requires balancing a user’s needs with business goals
  • Marketing – since UX professionals are essentially promoting and growing a brand
  • Math – due to the amount of analysis that is required
  • Hospitality – since these kinds of professionals always put the customer first, similar to what a UX professional should be doing
  • Journalism – due to the extent of writing done in UX
  • Computer Science – since speaking to programmers is such an essential part of UX
  • Graphic Design – since UI requires many visual skills.

UX is a broad field which borrows concepts and techniques from many different areas. It refers to figuring out who a user is and understanding their problems and challenges through the use of empathy, ideation, design and testing. A professional’s main goal is to take those problems and figure out solutions.

UX Designers and Researchers come from many different backgrounds and follow one of several UX processes to achieve their goals. Throughout this course, we will see how UX designers think, share, create wireframes, prototype, and test their work in an attempt to make a user’s life easier.
